I was a child of 10 when I fist met the band in my backyard. I have a
clear memory of Dermot with the chicken pox and looking miserable on the
lounge chair by the pool!
Fergus used to date my sister Maureen way back when, and I just wanted
to say hi!
I was watching a Great Big Sea video and saw Fergus, and had to look up
this site.
great to reminisce!

Dermott's my hero. I still say that Kay Tapper is the "West Country
Lady"!
When I was in the third grade a homework assignment we had was to tell
who our favorite artist was. I said Ryan's Fancy. It just so happened
that Fergus was subbing at my school that day, and my teacher took me
to meet him. I thought it was so great!
Great page, by the way. Keep it up! Thanks for the tunes last
Saturday at Kevin's too.

I was back home in Nfld for Christmas and went to George Street in St.
John's. Dropped in to O'rielly's Pub on a wednesday nite and
experienced once again the great sounds of Dermot O'Rielly and Fergus O' Byrne. I
listened to these guys and Dennis Ryan as a child growing up in Nfld.,
and to get a chance to see them play live was a thrill and a pleasure.I
hope i get to see them again someday soon.

What a treat it would have been to see this trio live back in the day.
Each musician is a master in his own right. To hear their music is a
treat. I would give anything to have all their recordings. I was lucky
enough to have Fergus O'Byrne as a music teacher for a brief while when I
attended Gould's Elementary back in the 80's, even though I didn't know
it at the time.

I Play guitar and mandolin, but most importantly I am from Spaniard's
Bay NL where Ryan's Fancy has been and still is a big influence on what
I play. The Boston Burglar was the first song I played from listening to
Ryan's Fancy. I now live in Eastern Passage NS and well that is not
where my heart is. I actually went to college in the late 80's and was in
the same class as Dermot's wife Ann. a very nice lady.
Awesome site , and a buddy of mine Franky Raymond says hello Dermott.

Living in Calgary, grew up in Cape Breton. Pretty much raised on Ryan's
Fancy & John Allan Cameron. My mom & dad had all of the albums except
the very first, and have given them to me (just listening to some of the
tunes tonight - great, great tunes). One of my favorites - Coal Town
Road. My dad was a coal miner most of his life so I can relate to the
lyrics. Never heard anyone else do that song - any history on it?
I'd love to see you guys play - but never get a chance to get to
Newfoundland. Do you guys ever make it to the west to play?
Please never stop playing & singing - you guys are the best.

Being from Newfoundland I am a big fan of Ryan's Fancy. Although I am only 33 and was born around the same time the boy's began, I grew up listening to them and watching their specials on CBC. I wish there was a way to get ahold of some of their recordings. I only have one of their old records and it is in pretty bad shape. They should reproduce their albums on cd so a few more generations could enjoy their music.

Growing up, I watched RF with my grandfather (who would have been well over 100 years old by now) and grandmother (now 96). This group played an important role in the lives of a variety of Canadians. Many of the punks of the late 70’s and 80’s had this group in their record collections and were devoted fans. R F is bound with our memories of growing up and what it means to be Canadian. I wish the CBC would play the old series again, do a documentary, or something to acknowledge their importance. Similarly a release their albums on CD would be great as my old vinyl has worn out.

Regarding the episode "Bonavista Line," I think it must have been taped in 1975, because I saw it for the first time in March of 1976 (I was ten years old at the time). The same episode was retelecast on May 17, 1999 as part of CBC's "Rewind" series. As a traveller on the Bonavista Branch train every summer during my school days, I have fond memories of the Bonavista Branch railway, and watching this episode made me feel as though I were literally riding the rails again. I enjoyed every minute of it, and especially the camera shots of some of the communities, such as the level road crossing at Long Pond near Bonavista, of Trinity, of the church in Trinity East, etc. I remember you guys did a lot of traditional songs for that episode, including one of my favourites "Tickle Cove Pond," and a one in which every stanza ended with "Bonavist' Line." This is a wonderful and comprehensive website. Keep up the great work; I will be sure and visit again.

What a shock to find this site! I remember being DEVASTATED in junior high when the news of the disbandment came. I had such a crush on Dermot! I had no idea he was still performing. Caught Fergus' gig at Celtic Colours in Cape Breton last fall. It's a long shot, but does anyone know of the first album for sale at any price? It's been long desired for an extensive collection of "stuff" I still treasure. (902)469-4622. Cheers!

I grew up listening to my dad singing Ryan's Fancy tunes, and as I got older I really started to appriciate what their music, and the music of other East coast bands meant. People from the East coast are very unique, and the Folk music from there is a great example of that. I am from NFLD but have lived in BC for 9yrs, and when ever I get homesick I just put on some Ryan's Fancy music I can almost smell the salt air of home.

It is wonderful to be able to visit Ryan's Fancy online. It brings back wonderful memories for me and my family. The first time I heard the band, it was a TV show from Ontario. We never missed a show after the first one. The first time we met Fergus, Dermot & Denis was at a liberal convention at the Halifax Armouries. We were hooked. Their music is unique and there will never be another group who will ever even come close. Their personalities, their love for the music they played showed in every concert they played and every song they recorded. Years later I had the opportunity to hear Dermot and Fergus in Newfoundland and a mutual friend said to me " close your eyes Bev, it's like nothing ever changed. The magic is still there". For those of us who had the privilege to hear and be a part of the "Ryan's Fancy" era, we are thrilled to see this site, proud and happy for the honours they will receive. For the web masters.... Thanks! Bev, Sheryl & Bill

Hi guys: What wonderful memories came flooding back as I browsed the pictures. Congratulations on your much-deserved ECMA Award. Can you believe you are now looked upon as the group who set the tone for much of the music and activity we now have in Atlantic Canada? You were just "doing your thing", right? But you were the Machum and Clancy of this area, and your sound was and is amazing. I'm glad to hear Fergus and Dermot still get together. I saw you all on stage in Halifax at the Tall Ships concert, along with our own Hal 'n Tow. I see Jim Stewart quite regularly. He comes by for a glass of scotch and helps me with my accounting. We had the recent CBC 20th anniversary in Saint John party at our Inn and Costos, Bill Preeper and Stan Carew were here. They were the Exploding Donuts at one of our Kingston Peninsula Folk Festivals. Stan was MC. We occasionally get together with the old gang from the Saint John Folk Club, but I don't get out to as many concerts now that I'm managing an Inn and Spa. Did get to the Cottars concert and saw Allistair and Beverley. I went with sister Winnie Leggett and sister-in-law Janet Gorham. Remember brother Allen Gorham looked a lot like hockey player Bobby Orr. At the filming of All on a Summer's Day, Allistair introduced him to some American Tourists as Bobby Orr and they asked for, and received, his autograph! That was the day the same American's asked if your group "Was someone famous". I believe it was Dermot who said, "Have you ever heard of Machum and Clancey?", No said the AT. "Good, because we're not them". "Have you ever heard of the Irish Rover's?" No said the AT. "Good, said Dermot, because we're not them either!" That was when Allistair decided to introduce Allen as Bobby Orr. The American's were so happy to finally meet "someone famous" and Allen signed autographs all around. What "a time" we had following you guys around the Maritimes. It was a wonderful time for our family - the Gorham's, MacKenzie's, Leggett's and Colpitts. We will never forget. Hope to see you playing in Saint John again. All the best, Willa

I left Newfoundland in 1994. About a week before I left, we had a HUGE party at the Stand. Fergus O'Byrne was playing there upstairs, and there was some other band playing downstairs. Well, not only did most of the downstairs bunch end up upstairs to here Fergus, but Fergus played well into the night, without taking a break. It was one of the best show and parties I've ever seen. It was my last night in a Newfoundland club, and last time hearing Newfoundland music live. It's a night I'll never forget. Awesome site!!!! (you need WAY more mp3's) Kevin www.offdarock.com

Congratulations to "the boys",on winning the Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award! I've known these guys since 1970 and never has a group been more deserving of this prestigous honour. In many ways, what Ryan's Fancy did was combine Irish,Newfoundland and Cape Breton music in their shows, and made Celtic "cool", thus opening the door for many Cape Bretoners, notably the Rankins.

We were the Ryan's Fancy groupies many years ago in the late seventies. Our whole family would show up wherever we could to be there for "the boys" Allistar Mac and had them to our homes, followed them to our kids Universities, pubs, while they did wonderful things for the CBC. with greatest respect these guys still look great and sound great and we, the entire Gorham Family from the Kingston Penn. in N.B. still talk about them as if they were our family. While only 21, I have been a Ryan's Fancy fan since I have been old enough to recognize the voices of Fergus, Dennis and Dermot. I strongly believe that as Newfoundlanders we owe Ryan's Fancy a debt that we will never be able to fully repay. It is because of Ryan's Fancy that I have the appreciation and love of traditional music that I have today. There is something about the melodies of Ryan's Fancy that just haunt your soul and entrance you. I'll be a Ryan's Fancy fan till the day I die! Thank you Fergus, Dermot and Dennis.

Here's a HUGE congratulations to Ryan's Fancy on their ECMA award. It's been a long time coming and might I add, very deserving. When I first met Fergus and Dermot, I found them to be both wonderful people, equally as wonderful as the music they've provided us with for so many years. Then, ECMA weekend, I was truly honored to finally meet the third piece of the puzzle, Denis. And, wouldn't you know it....again, another fine gentlemen. I then had the distict pleasure of both watching and listening to Ryan's Fancy! I guess I just wanted to say, this is not only a congratulations, but a thank you. Thank you for all the years of great music, and for bringing me back to a small Church basement in Arnold's Cove, 25 years ago.

I saw Ryan's Fancy live several times in three provinces and they were always superb, regardless of the size of the audience. At one pub venue in Alberta, there was far less than a full house, but the lads stayed until the end, playing every note for the pure enjoyment of making fine music. Between sets, we shared some pints and they spun some tales of the road. Partly because of their influence, I've been involved as a musician in a Celtic band for years - and regardless of whether we're playing before a thousand or 20 people, I try to be as enthusiastic and professional as Ryan's Fancy was. I'd like to echo those who'd like to see a doxed set of Ryan's Fancy CDs. I've got everything Ryan's Fancy ever did on vinyl but this is a new age.

OK. Now that Ryan's Fancy is very much in the public eye after their ECMA award, is it not high time that SOMEBODY takes a good look at their stellar career, and put together a boxed set of their music??? This is manditory, actually. How do we make this happen? Has anybody spoken to the lads? They were, they are THE REAL DEAL. (And a Ryan's Fancy reunion concert would be pretty cool too, of course!)

Well, at least after the ECMA's I can say I saw them ( aside from a vague 10 year old's recollection) sing together even if it was a great sounding 20-30 second snippet of Tiree Love Song. Wow!!! So, reunite, tour, get the rights to the catalogue, and get all the TV stuff on dvd. That would be great. Get the continued praise and monetary gain from it they deserve. Dare to dream. :)

I had the privilege of seeing and hearing Dermot and Fergus at Mickey Quinn's last night in the midst of the ECMA Conference. What a wonderful performance, with a lively and appreciative audience -- a great show! You've brought a wealth of song and laughter to so many fans over the years, I'm delighted that you're being recognized for your contribution to Atlantic Canada's music scene.

Great website and one I'll be visiting quite often. your music is among the best;the songs from the shows cd is excellent stuff and can't wait for the next release???? Fergus and Dermot still put off an awesome show and when are you guys coming back to Flannigans pub,Clarenville? Congrats on your lifetime achievement award. Bought tickets to the ECMA's to see you guys accept it. Cheers

Well, I've heard Denis will be at the ECMA's. I wasn't sure if he would go or not, but now I'm twice as excited to see this! I only vaguely recall seeing Ryan's Fancy at a winter carnival in Labrador City when I was 10, still have a pic somewhere, so this will be cool. I'll have to sneak in the camera. :) How's it going Roger?
